We spent the morning eating toast in our dressing-gowns in front of the TV, watching people cheering all over the world. It was impossible not to get quite emotional about it all, even though everyone is at pains to point out that Obama is not some kind of superman and the world is still in a mess.

Obama's speech was so moving to me, when he basically said (to paraquote): For those of you worried that our beacon no longer shines brightly, tonight's election proves that it does, and that our nation's greatness is not defined by its wealth or power, but by its hope.

We went up onto the roof and I was so happy, everyone was screaming and flashing their house lights and honking their horns, and I yelled, "America! We have a right to exist in this world!"
