Scarlett Johansson's long-awaited/dreaded album of Tom Waits covers is upon us. The first single is this, and my general feeling is that it's a disaster.

I particularly love that song, it's a rare one, and one I like to play on the piano. I sing it rather worse than she does, but then I'm not inflicting my efforts on the general public. Bah ( Read more... )

She deserves an A+ for effort. She actually sounds much better than 99 percent of the crap on the radio right now.

So it's ok, you reckon? Hmm. Maybe I'm just blinded by my love of the original then..

Wait...what? I hadn't heard about this or I would have been complaining at every opportunity.

Scarlett, I used to appreciate your bee-sting lips and your pseudo-indie cred. But you're losing points. Very fucking rapidly.

Let's just pretend it never happened. I'm off to watch her pink knickers in the opening of Lost in Translation again.

it's really weird how she sings it in a long drone, with no expression. I think she's really into that faux-1980s style...meh.

Oh is THAT what it's supposed to sound like! You're right, it is very expressionless. Nah, I don't like it.

I'm speechless. No, wait, it's coming to me... what a great song, completely lost in the translation to actor-wants-to-be-eclectic-cool rubbish.
Obviously, to make any kind of informed comment, I should listen to the whole lot. But I can't, I just can't. It's horrible.

I've just had an awful thought. There may well be children out there (think of the children!) who believe she wrote it. How can we put an end to this madness?!

I actually haven't listened to it all the way through either. It just annoys me so much.

The album has had really good reviews though! I'm not sure whether or not to give any of the other sings a chance. If they're all like this I'll really hate it.
