I fopr  know there are other Rebecca West fans reading this blog: you may want to have a look at a (seemlingly random) assessment of her critical abilities in the Guardian over the weekend. Awesome, I will check that out. I wish I appreciated Eliot more. At uni I wrote a long essay about the notes to The Waste Land and how they were an elaborate joke on academia (which I really believed at the time)- but later on I increasingly felt that he was deadly serious, and it is that humorlessness which always sticks in my throat when I read him.

West was brilliant on the Nazis, partly because she was such a fan of the rest of German culture. Her book on the Nurenberg trials is fab. And she was cool....I always forget that because my landlord, who was a friend, only knew her as an old lady so I get endless stories of her in that phase of life. In print this article was accompanied by a picture of her in 1932, and she looks so hot.
