it's not really about what he was or what he could do, but what Williams has been saying since 2005: McCarthy is going to be a starter with this organization. He even traded Freddy Garcia, and specifically said it was because he wanted to open up a spot for McCarthy.
As for him not being that good, I watched him *destroy* the Red Sox on Labor Day 2005. He's a setup pitcher who relies heavily on a highly accurate changeup that he loves to work high and tight, so his appearances out of the bullpen meant that he didn't have time to setup batters.
I'm just confused about Williams' decision. So now, what? We've got Buerhle, Vasquez (why?), Garland, and Contreras as our front four, and a whole mess of fresh-out-the-minors arms. And no more Ross Gload either, who was one of our better super-subs. I'm not impressed with this offseason.
