Sexism and the Internet

Not really sure what to say about this. I'm fairly used to coming across something sexist at Moronail, but some of the images take things a little too far. Like these.

Violent images beneath the cut. )

gang rape, sexism, rape, the internet, violence

I'm pretty sure the 1 Timothy 2:11 was not meant to be taken humorously originally, just created in order to wave it in the face of Christians during an argument.

Also, most of this stuff probably originated on 4chan. If you don't know what that site is, I would NOT recommend visiting it, ever. If you find any of this stuff remotely offensive, you would not last 1 minute on 4chan.

One more thing, most of this stuff is "troll material." Trolling on the internet, that sort of thing. I would say it's not worth getting pissed off at, but of course someone here will take offense to that. Bottom line: TROLL. MATERIAL.

Hey, not ALL of 4chan is this bad!

But yeah, this is troll material. On the EXTREME side of troll material, but yeah. Personally, though, if you have to use something so blatant and lacking in any sort of skill or effort to get a rise out of people, you're doing it wrong.

Clearly their disclaimer is a joke and they haven't bothered to put up every possible offensive thing. The disclaimer doesn't bother me.

In fact, I certainly have no beef with the website itself at all based on the images up on the site. I think this issue is much greater than one website, it's the societal attitude that these things are indeed funny.

I also realize that there's a bit of a movement on the internet to take things that are really terrible and offensive and to turn them into humor. I think a lot of the time it's just a desire to be over the top.

You make an excellent point. Would men laugh at the image that has 5 men supposedly ready to gang rape the woman walking by if that woman was a man? I think not. And neither would women. I was trying this idea on all the images - making men the target of the humour - and not one of them struck me as funny.

Actually probably yes, because I guarantee you that the kind of person (likely "kind of man") who laughs at the gang-rape "joke" is also the kind who thinks homophobia is hilarious.

These are really bad. As mentioned previously these are most likely used by trolls and other assorted questionable characters who think it's funny.

It's not so much that trolls find sexism funny as they find the shitstorm that it causes to be funny. They KNOW it's wrong, and they KNOW it's disgusting. That's why they use it.

Personally, I find the use of such universal and overt issues as trolling material to be pretty sad. It's as if they aren't bright enough to utilize more subtle techniques.
