Old news (to this Vermonter, anyway), but it's terribly sad :/ There's something relaxing about a squeaking bat going over your head at night while you roam around the streets looking for other night creatures.
I'm wondering how the bats in my hometown are doing (northeast VT). My town voted down putting windmills on our mountain because of the habitat for bats and other animals. I like to think that place is a sanctuary from most things, but I wouldn't be surprised to find few bats there now as well.
It's kinda grim up here (upstate NY), so I can't really imagine NE VT is much better.
I know I had to basically buy new shoes and stuff to do casual caving when I was out in the PNW last summer; even though I hadn't taken my shoes into any caves out here, they wanted to make sure there was absolutely no chance of contamination (and I don't blame the rangers one bit). On top of that, they had locked down all the caves where there were bats actively roosting, just in case.
