"Nong Youhui: Chinese Boy Can See in the Dark"

Feb 24, 2009 15:46

(Did no one else post this yet?)

Lucky!

"Doctors have studied Nong Youhui’s amazing eyesight since his dad took him to hospital in Dahua, southern China, concerned over his bright blue eyes.

Dad Ling said: "They told me he would grow out of it and that his eyes would stop glowing and turn black like most Chinese people but they never did."

Light blue eyes = being able to see perfectly in complete darkness.

It's ok, I can read a street sign half a mile away but I can't tell the difference between a plus sign and a division sign if you hold a book up to my face.

I have green eyes though, so that might be the problem methinks!

Medical tests conducted in complete darkness show Youhui can read perfectly without any light...

That's not light sensitivity, that's some kind of Radar Sense that can detect the relative density of the media and the marking material. Even Ultravision needs starlight to work. I call bullshit.

"Reminds me of a Russian girl years back, who supposedly had such sensitive fingers that she could tell the colour of an object by touch. Oddly enough, this power completely vanished when tested under controlled conditions!"

I did watch something on a German TV programme where a blind woman was able to tell the colour of textiles through touch (even whether it was stripey). I dunno how controlled the conditions were, but it seemed genuine. Her explanation - the 'tougher' the dye felt, the darker the colour, and over time (I think she was blind all of her life), she'd learnt to tell apart the textures and link them to the name of the colour. It was pretty interesting to watch her demonstrate this ability, to say the least.

...being married to a blind woman, and having attended a couple of NFB conventions, I find myself more than a little skeptical about that one.

You realize this is from The Sun, right? This sounds interesting, but unless there's a corroborating source, I'm inclined against really believing it...

Yeah, I have ocular albinism too. Yeah, it makes my eyes blue. It also makes it painful to walk around outside without sunglasses. Not so lucky.

I'm not Chinese though. Just white and nerdy.

Same here, I feel your pain. I live in a place where there is a complete blanket of blinding white snow on the ground for 5 months of the year and...yeah :

Yeah, I have it too. My blue eyes have darkened as I've gotten older, but it hasn't helped the problem. My eyes also don't adjust to light changes very well. Sucks at night, when I can see just fine in the dark with no street lights, then a car comes the opposite way, and all I see is glare, even when they pass. Good times. :(

That was my first thought...I don't even have anything defined...just really light blue/grey eyes that love being super sensitive to light. I get funny looks when I'm wearing sunglasses when it's cloudy and "dark" to most people. :/

I so want to buy those magic night driving glasses off of TV but they probably suck and my love of infomercials will do me no good. ;)
