They're not really gay :V
They're just over compensating for a lack of available females, bless 'em

I'd heard that with the other pair, though, they tried their damndest to get them to mate with females and they wouldn't.

'A German zoo provoked outrage from gay lobby groups after attempting to mate a group of gay male penguins with Swedish female birds who were flown in especially to seduce them. But the project was abandoned after the males refused to be "turned", showing no interest in their would-be mates.'

No, they really are that into each other. Of course, calling them 'gay' is an oversimplification, but in the news business, it gets clicks/ad revenue, so it's what we get.

In at least one case, though, one member of a male-male pair ended up randomly going with a female later on.

Awesome icon, btw.

Yes! And they raised the baby together...who became a lesbian. Later on, one of the "gay" penguins left his mate for a female penguin.

That was in our paper too (in a significantly shorter version of the article, though) and it made me laugh out loud. I find it hilarious, though infinitely adorable as well ^^ I go with what you said: just give the guys an egg and let them be one happy little family as well ^^
