Puppies do too, actually... and they have needle-sharp claws when they're that young. Most mammals are pretty tough - I have goats and watching the kids nurse is cringe-worthy, between the biting and the head-butting, but the mothers barely take notice most of the time.

Still... that is one tolerant pooch. Usually dogs aren't too eager to keep nursing once they've weaned a litter.
