One of the books I bought on to my last trip to Sydney was Simon Winchester's Krakatoa - The Day The World Exploded - 27th August 1883Enthralling read. I never knew, for example, that 3 locals had been on the island the day the nearby beach first started erupting. I read the book on it, fascinating.

I bought my mother that book for Christmas a couple years back (we used to live in Jakarta, and we've gone on vacation to the beach near Anak Krakatau and gone to the little disaster museum... scary as hell, that museum, it's just filled with human and cow skeletons), and she loves the book to pieces, thinks it's fascinating.

Well, I hope it was the right spot. That's all according to Google Maps. But yeah, that weird volcano-looking shape, with the distinctive glowing red centre? Just a *WEE* bit freaky!

yup, that's Anak Krakatau alright. It's grown that big since the 30's. The bigger island to the south is all that's left of Mt. Rakata
