According to a March 30th article from New Scientist, the tuatara, a New Zealand lizard sort of lizard-snake cross LET'S JUST SAY REPTILE, is the fastest-evolving animal known.

Technically not: snakes evolved from lizards, with their nearest cousins being monitor lizards. To put it into SAT terms - snake is to lizard as bird is to dinosaur (there were lots of dinosaurs groups, but only one group that evolved into birds). Tuataras are the 'cousins' of squamates (lizards + snakes).
