An example of why this society sucks.

Kid walks part of a mile from school to soccer practice, "hundreds" of people call 911People, 911 is for EMERGENCIES. Dumb asses. This shit reminds me of a picture I saw the other day of play ranges by generation: the great-grandfather was allowed to walk 6 MILES to go fishing, the grandfather slightly less, the mother even less, and the mother's ( Read more... )

children, 911 fail, paranoia, the culture of fear, stupid people

That's truly fucking ridiculous. What has the world come to where it's socially unacceptable to walk somewhere. Back when I was in elementary school I walked the mile home from school every day. Even now I prefer to walk places I'm within five miles of, and I do not live in a nice area. And Americans wonder why Obesity is rampant.

Gods, yes. Most places we lived, school was less than a mile from where we lived, and I always walked it. The only time I ever took the bus to school was the several years we lived out in the fracking country, and it was like 15 miles to the nearest town. And we eventually moved into that town to make things easier, and I went back to walking ( ... )

I'll be honest: I only ever walked to school one time, and that was to band camp, because I couldn't drive yet, and everyone was busy, and I couldn't get anyone I knew on the phone. XP

My parents drove me to school, even though it wasn't all THAT far away (except for my junior high), because there were really, really unsafe roads where people flew like fucking maniacs, and they were dangerous on foot.

Bad news. Not having a credit history (or worse, one that only shows that you sometimes pay bills late) counts against you when they check you out after you apply for a job.

And at age 10, I was walking almost two miles each way to school. And wandering thru woods and playing near a river half a mile from the house. Of course, that was also 1965...

o_O What the flying fuck does a credit history have anything to do with getting a job? What kind of shit-fucking idiot thought of that?

Less fearful times, those.

It's an "objective" measurement. And generally folks with good credit ratings are responsible, etc.

The problem is that the reverse isn't true.

Like so many other things, it's an attempt to eliminate judgment calls from something.

Hell, before debit cards, most places wouldn't let you write a check for a purpose unless you had a credit card. Fortunately, here in Oregon we had a ballot initiative that passed making it illegal to do that.

We need one to make it illegal to check credit ratings for any purpose other than extending credit. (and that does include opening a new account with a utility)

Agreed!!! I can't get a decent job to pay all of my bills on time because of my credit (that my ex so generously left for me to deal with on 1/3 the income and twice the expenses (kids). I can see if you were guarding a vault at a bank, but who, now a days, does not have unexpected debt? Why can't I get a job as a customer service rep in a freeking call center unless I have great credit (or live in india).

*steps off soap box*

Sorry PMS......

I don't know why I even bother trying to hope for some common sense to grace our society. What the hell???!! If the kid was on fire or something, THEN you can call 911. Not when he's just WALKING! And he had a fucking cell phone!!

The ONLY reasons my kids don't walk to school more is I am too lazy to wake their butts up 20 minutes earlier in the morning (because I would have to get up earlier too) and for 4 months out of the school year it is physically dangerous to spend more than a few moments outside, let alone a half hour. (I'm talking -10 to -35 degrees at the worst).

BUT

They are getting older so this winter they became acquainted with their OWN alarm clocks. This spring, the one whos school is closer will start walking (in the next couple of weeks even). The middle school is 1 house shy of 2 miles away and uphill the entire way and I hate having to call in excuses for tardies. He does walk home often though.

They already walk or *gasp* ride bikes, all over town and have for the last few Summers to get to and from the Boys and Girls club. If someone accused me of negligence, I would likely be hauled off for my own protection because I couldn't stop laughing at them.

and I added that blog to my fav's list. FREE RANGE KIDS...I LOVE it!
