My problem with Counterspell is that it created a new style of play: denial. Matches where nothing gets done. Blue/white control decks taking 30 minutes to do nothing, slowly grinding you down 1 life at time. Swing for 2? A red letter day, the game moved twice as fast for a half second!. It's the mindset that it created that is the problem, not the card.

It may not be as interesting as other types of abilities, but it's good that the game has a diversity of abilities.

The problem is that one person isn't playing. The guy with the U/W control deck sits there and doesn't do ANYTHING except counter spells and wait for some ridiculous bomb card to win. The other guy wastes his time playing a game in which he has no role. The other guy serves only as a foil for the controller to showcase his awesomeness at denial and not letting someone else play.
