I loved this take on that scene and the alternative to how it actually played out, especially the final line. My heart broke too.

I'd love to read a follow up with Jack captaining the Dutchman during the attack on the Endeavour.

AWE was such a mess that it was never really clear ( at least to me) if Jack would have gone through it or not...but I thought it would be fun to do a take on what might have happened. I'm glad you liked it! I have a couple more ideas surrounding this idea floating in my head and it may actually turn into a prologue for a longer story.
