Sergei smiled at his wife where she sat curled up in front of the fireplace of the cabin he’d rented for the weekend. Her smile in return warmed his heart as only she could do, and he could feel her contentment and love through their link.
This weekend was a break from reality, just the two of them, the trees, the bedroom (he thought with a faint smirk), and no one to intrude. Their days of running and hiding were at an end, but before they started insinuating themselves into society and ironing out their alibi, he wanted them to celebrate their newfound freedom.
“Here you go, my love,” he said, handing her the drink he’d mixed. “To freedom,” he toasted, clicking his glass against hers.
Eighteen-year-old Sergei laughed as he dodged the squishy potions ingredient that Belle threw at him. It was three in the morning, and the three of them were only now getting tired. Ever since they’d transferred to Idyllwild, they tended more now than ever to do their best work at night.
Ree shouted out a warning and he narrowly missed slipping on a rug. It was really late if they were goofing off in the lab, but they were basically odne and had nothing going that could blow up in their faces, even if some randomly thrown object plopped in the (useless) potion.
They finally collapsed in a pile on the couch, laughing and having fun. It was nice to be able to laugh again, after what had happened before, at their last school. They all had lost their childhoods before that, so any chance to have fun, they grabbed onto with both hands and held on tight.
