This Yoongi came to me while I was reading something completely different a couple of weeks ago, and he didn't shut up. Now I've got a couple of thousand words of this AU and I'm not sure what to do with it, so I decided to post some of it here, haha.
Yoongi is the youngest son of the King of Rohan. This takes place in Edoras and is sort of a sequel to the story itself. It's written in past tense because Yoongi's thinking back to this moment sometime in the future.
My knowledge of the Lord of The Rings comes from the movies and the book, which I haven't read in at least ten years, so please bear with me.
Yoongi was six when he saw him for the first time, sitting in his mother's lap as a group of seven men, dressed in furs and leather, had entered Meduseld to seek an audience with the King of Rohan, Yoongi's father.
They were tall, Yoongi remembers, taller than most the men of Rohan. All of them had dark brown or black hair, fair skin and gray eyes. Yoongi doesn't remember what they had asked of his dad, or what their business with Rohan was, but he remembers distinctly when the group of men had shuffled to reveal a boy, gently pushing him forward to the man who had been talking the most, he was probably their leader.
Then, and only then, had Yoongi's full attention been on the group of strangers. The boy looked Yoongi's age, but older in a way Yoongi couldn't quite describe. He, too, was dressed mostly in furs, clothes thicker and warmer than they had needed to be in Rohan at this time of the year. The boy's hair was brown, mostly covered by the hood of his cloak, but it had looked different than the older men's. Smoother, maybe, softer.
What had struck Yoongi the most was the boy's ice blue eyes. The boy's eyes had been on Yoongi's dad mostly, but for a brief second his gaze had slid over to Yoongi, meeting Yoongi's curious gaze. As their gazes met, Yoongi had felt his heart racing. The boy had blinked, and his gaze had ventured back to the King.
Yoongi doesn't remember how the meeting ended but remembers that his mom had told him that the boy would stay in Rohan for now. Yoongi had gone looking for him in Meduseld multiple times a day, curious about this new boy, but hadn't been able to find him. There weren't many children allowed inside Meduseld, and especially not on an audience with the King. Yoongi had friends and playmates, sure, but there was something about this boy that had piqued his interest.
Yoongi's curiosity had finally been sated when he was introduced to the boy almost a month later, this time after pestering his bodyguard, Dongwoon. It had been snowing that day, Yoongi remembers, having been staring out his window while Dongwoon had gone to check with his mother that it was alright that he took Yoongi to greet their new guest.
Dongwoon returned after a couple of minutes, gently taking Yoongi's hand to lead the way. Yoongi had thought they were going to a room in Meduseld that he didn't know about, so he had been surprised when Dongwoon had led him out of the house and down several of the gravel stairs, leading to the heart of Edoras. They passed the stables, turned to the left and-
Yoongi knew where they were headed. He tightened his grip on Dongwoon's hand, walking slightly behind him as they had entered the blacksmith's shop. Back then, Yoongi found the blacksmith's shop quite scary. He doesn't remember exactly why, but suspects it had something to do with all the scary noises, the darkness, the fire, and the constant hammering.
Even with Dongwoon's big, warm, safe hand holding his own, the blacksmith's shop was still scary, but not quite as much as earlier. The log hut looked cozier in daylight. There was a fire going, but no insistent hammering of iron and metal. instead, the blacksmith was seated by the forge with the boy by his side, holding one of the blacksmith's tools. Both had looked up curiously when Dongwoon and Yoongi had stepped fully into the shop, Yoongi still hiding somewhat behind Dongwoon's legs.
"Sungmin," Dongwoon said, greeting the blacksmith with a nod of his head. "The princeling wanted to meet your young apprentice." Yoongi had flushed, tugging at Dongwoon's breeches with his small hands. Dongwoon had been too honest.
The boy's eyes widened, looking at Yoongi with interest.
"Ah, you saw him in Meduseld, did you not, prince Yoongi?" Sungmin asked kindly, looking at Yoongi, who nodded frantically behind Dongwoon's knees. Sungmin smiled at him, then turned to the new boy, taking the tool from his hands. Sungmin murmured something to him that Yoongi didn't hear, but he didn't really mind either. The boy nodded at Sungmin's words and turned fully towards Yoongi and Dongwoon.
He looked so different. The thick furs and the forest green coat he had been wearing were gone, replaced by breeches, black boots and a black long-sleeved shirt under a leather apron, the same kind that Sungmin was wearing, a blacksmith's apron. He looked like one of them now. As the boy stepped closer, Yoongi saw that his eyes were still as blue, still as icy cold as the first time Yoongi saw him and the sight made Yoongi's tummy tickle. The boy's brown hair was slightly longer, now, curling slighly around his earlobes and neck. It still looked so soft.
He looked so kind, so friendly, so different. Yoongi's entire being itched to get to know him.
The boy stopped in front of Dongwoon, eyeing him cautiously before looking back at Yoongi. The boy bit his lips, looking at Sungmin over his shoulder, who nodded once. Yoongi knew what he was going to do before he did it. "I'm Yoongi, Min Yoongi. Please don't kneel," Yoongi said quickly, his voice barely a whisper, but the boy had heard him. He paused mid-movement, wobbling slightly. "You don't have to kneel."
People are obligated to bow because he's the prince, his mother had told him, but Yoongi didn't like it. Even at his young age, he felt like it automatically put some distance between himself and others. Distance that made it impossible to become proper friends. Distance that made others think twice before talking to him and often not talking to him or including him at all. Yoongi didn't like it.
Something tugged at the corners of the boy's thick lips as Yoongi stepped out from behind Dongwoon's long legs. The boy got back up on his feet, nodding, as if he got it.
"It's nice to meet you, Your Royal Highness," the boy said, bowing his head slightly. His voice was light, friendly. Yoongi felt warm. "My name is Seokjin."
Seokjin.
"Kim Seokjin," Sungmin supplied helpfully from behind Seokjin. Seokjin's eyes widened again, a soft, pink hue settling in his cheeks. Yoongi smiled.
"It's nice to meet you, Kim Seokjin," Yoongi said.
Yoongi didn't know it then, but the boy in front of him was going to brighten his life considerably over the next days, months, and years.
[This is the last sentence]Yoongi didn't know it then, but the boy in front of him was going to brighten his life considerably over the next days, months, and years.
