Writercon Social Chats

Jul 03, 2006 01:29

The poll results are in, and it looks like our best bet is to schedule several chat sessions so that folks in various time zones have a good shot at making at least one of them. So, schedule:

Chat 1: Wednesday, July 5 10pm EST
Chat 2: Sunday, July 9, 7pm EST
Chat 3: Wednesday, July 12 4pm EST
Chat 4: Sunday, July 16, 10pm EST

Hopefully, that will give nearly everyone a chance to attend.

We meet in IRC. Don't be scared! If you know how to use any instant messenger, you'll do fine with IRC. Server=SorceryNet, Channel=#wc2006 (Concom note: this is NOT our usual channel!)

Here's the drill:

Connect using the Java IRC applet:

With the Java-based client you don't have to install anything on your computer. The only requirement is a webbrowser with support for Java 1.3 or higher. Most recent browsers already have this by default. Scroll down the page at http://www.iuturna.sorcery.net/ and look for the java chat login

Nickname: [type in your nickname]
Channel: #wc2006

Then click "Connect"

Or, if Java doesn't agree with your machine or browser, try Trillian or mIRC (I like IRC best)

Connect using Trillian:

Go to Trillian-->Connections-->Manage My connections
Click "Add a New Connection" and choose IRC
Server Alias= #wc2006
click on the ... to see a list of IRC servers. Choose SorceryNet.
Fill in Nickname, User Name, and User Info with your name.
Click "Connect"
The connection will go live. Now go find the IRC icon in your Trillian buddy list (it's a little white sphere under my user icon, to the right of AIM and ICQ). Right click and choose "Show Status Window".

The status window will appear, and a bunch of stuff will scroll past. At the bottom in the text entry line, type: /join #wc2006

And there you are!

Or (we use mirc for concom meetings regularly)

Connect using mirc:

Step 1: Download mirc and install. You can get it here -- http://www.mirc.org/

(text that follows stolen shamelessly from the great instructions at http://www.atwatcher.com/index.php/content/ircfaq ; read it there if you want more info!)

Installing mIRC is simple, that's one of the reasons we like it. Simply download the file from www.mirc.com and run it. The install file asks you for the directory, defaulting to c:\mirc, and that's it! Everything else is automated.

Step 2: Connect to IRC

Connecting to IRC is almost as easy as installing it. When you first run the program, the options window pops up with a small form to fill out. In thr drop-down listbox, you choose the server. Just change this to Sorcerynet: Random server and you'll have no problem connecting.

In the box where it says Full Name, just enter your first name, or perhaps a character name. This isn't displayed, but it's a good precaution to not put much personal information into these windows. The same carries for the E-Mail Address box.

Finally, you have the Nickname and Alternative boxes. These are what control the name you appear as, so pick whatever you want. If someone already has the nickname you put in the first box, mIRC will try to set you to the alternative. If neither work, it will prompt you for a different nickname.

At the bottom of the menu is a checkbox labelled Invisible Mode. Basically, this has to do with people being able to check if you're connected without knowing your nickname, like listing all the nicknames on the server. We suggest you put a check in this box, just for privacy and security.

Now just click on the Connect to IRC server button, and you'll be connected in no time at all.

Step 3: Join the Channel

Joining a channel is simple. If you've done everything correctly, you'll be looking at a channels folder list. This list isn't very useful, so I suggest you uncheck the Pop up folder on connect box, and close the window by hitting the small X in the corner.

Now you'll be staring at a window that is prompting you for a command. If you want to see a listing of the channels currently open, type in /list, but since you already know the channel name, you don't have to do that. The command to join a channel is /join . To get to the Writercon chat, type /join #wc2006

And that's all she wrote, folks. At least one concom member, most likely several, will attend each chat, and it's a great way to meet others who are planning to attend, ask questions and receive answers, and generally get ready to have a great time at Writercon '06
