More marvellous medieval maps

Here's a nifty new tool. Harvard University has just released a beta version of the Digital Atlas of Roman and Medieval Civilizations (DARMC). You can use it to construct customized maps of Europe and the Mediterranean world, including physical features, the political boundaries of various kingdoms and periods, Roman roads, medieval universities ( Read more... )

...I don't suppose you can point me to a good atlas of Migration Era/Early Viking Era Europe? Very hard to tell what's good when looking online, and - from a writer and parenting point of view - I need terrain and names, not patterns of triangles on a featureless land mass.

Hmm, I don't think I know of a really good historical atlas for that period and the atlas shelf at the medieval studies library isn't showing me anything great. The Penguin Atlas of World History, vol. 1, is the only one I've seen that devotes more than two or three pages to the early Middle Ages, but it's quite a small paperback book, so the maps don't have a lot of detail. There must be something better out there...
