Reminds me of a breeder I used to house-sit for when I was in college. Each dog had a specific food and method of preparing it (most involved yogurt and a variety of supplements added to kibble, but in different quantities and combinations).
I have to say, though, that she was responsible and no longer bred a bitch that had two litters of puppies showing rather severe hip dysplasia. Instead, she started training some of those dogs for water rescue, where they wouldn't have the stress on their hips.
I'm so sorry that you have to deal with folks who think they know more than you all the time. They should know who they're dealing with!
It always boggles my mind when people want a pure-bred from a breeder. However, I will say that my MSPCA adoptions cost as much as a breeder adoption would have. I think the MSPCA would have a better adoption success rate if they didn't charge quite so much.
There is no truth to the concept that a dog (or cat) has an inherent personality based solely upon breed; like all animals (including humans), how you raise the animal is 90% of it. Just about the only reason I can see for people to get a purebred is specific allergies--and even those can usually be worked around.
