And because the news in my professional journals has been so very dismal.  Anyone remember the cat and dog food recalls?  The fact that the situation was known for months before anyone found out, and the vets were some of the last to know?  Here is 'the rest of the story'

I'm wondering how far out of business a $24M fine would have put them. I've never heard of this company, so my guess is "pretty far", but you know better than I. If they are out of business, I'm not sure jail would have done them much better, although were I the judge, I'd have enjoined them from working/owning/operating a food or food-related business, for man or animal, for the rest of their natural lives.

If I were sadistic and the judge? I'd have them write a weekly cheque to each of the attorneys who prosecuted their cases for the princely sum of $1, for the rest of their lives. Hand-written cheques only, and a handwriting sample would be required before they leave the courthouse. $1 isn't much, but it's enough to make them think about what they did at least once a week. I've heard this has been done before, and the person hit with the penalty didn't make it past the first year before his head got to him-- he ended up in contempt of court, and went to jail. When he came out, he still had those weekly cheques to write...

I want to clarify, though...
I specified cheques to the attorney's offices, simply because they have direct ties to the courts, and they tend to act as local institutions, with robust resources for dealing with these kinds of things. Thus, they could handle the issue of comparing handwriting samples fairly easily, which a commoner might have more trouble managing.
My preference would be that these cheques would then promptly be turned over to the local SPCA/shelter/rescue/etc. for their benefit. I suspect no attorney worth his salt would disagree, especially after prosecuting such a case.

I'm not alone, that company managed to piss off most of the veterinarians in this country, good thing we all know we'd lose our licenses if convicted of a felony...
