I didn't have any tallow ones alas - it would have been fun to do a comparison. I had some beeswax ones (which gave a lovely, strong and even light, some really cheap paraffin ones (less good) and two weird ones which were supposed to burn with a purple flame, but didn't. (The flame looked weird, but it wasn't really the spectacular eldritch violet I'd been hoping for!)

I adore this update, and the beautiful staging/arrangement of your desk. A delight!
I read an article recently on how UK cuisine doesn't greatly use spices and how that happened. All down to people following the fashion of perfectly pairing specific ingredients. The more subtle the flavours the more 'educated' your palate, apparently. bleh.

(and gosh, don't you cut a dash in the second breeches pic! I see why ladies required fanning back in the day!)

My desk is gloriously photogenic =)

Is that what it was? Goddamn it - fashion has no business in the kitchen - it ruins everything! I saw a print advert for Sainsburys the other day; it advocated putting instant coffee into bolonaise sauce to perk it up. I have no idea if that's fashion but it sounds bloody disgusting =P

Heehee - thank you =) That was the day of course that the postman called, not any of the other days when I just looked mildly unusual. (He did not swoon at the sight of me, he just looked confused, but then again he wasn't a young lady so I suppose it's understandable.)

hahahah. Tis unprofessional for a bearer of the post to forswear the duties inherent in the role by swooning. I applaud his commitment to his role.

I am weirdly tempted to try the coffee thing.... I have in the past been pleasantly surprised by a bletch sounding combo. (oh and this wasn't the article I read on spices, but covers similar ground: http://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2015/03/26/394339284/how-snobbery-helped-take-the-spice-out-of-european-cooking)

Ooh, shiny =)

You're braver than I - but tell me if you do try it, I'd be curious to know whether it actually worked!
