That truly is a gorgeous thing. My Nanna ha a writing desk similar to that (but not, I think, anywhere near that old, probably mid to late 19thcentury?) that she brought with her when she emigrated from the UK to Australia, and I adored it. When she passed, and her house was being sorted out, I tentatively asked what was happening to it, and was very swiftly informed that one of my aunts had claimed it.
I am, also, like that policeman, jealous of your awesome coat. The midnight blue is utterly stunning.
It's funny how some bits of furniture or other objects have a personality all of their own and are so easy to love (even when they're broken or impractical.) I wonder how some things do that?
