Loopiness like that probably signals a problem with the tension; this is controlled in any number of places but hopefully there will be 'tension discs' on the top/front somewhere. Without seeing the machine I can't suggest what to twiddle, though :)

Wow! Um, I've never used one that old, so it's hard for me to say. Best option (aside from getting someone more knowledgeable to sit there and help) is to follow the thread path from the bobbin to the needle, through any loops and hooks it attaches to, and see what adjustments are possible. Ideally there would be a knob or wheel towards the needle end of the machine through which the thread passes, which regulates how tight it is pulled, but this may not be the case on a machine that old.

http://www.sewalot.com/tension_adjustments.htm is an article about tension adjustments. I suggest a course of careful fiddling with the machine (locate a knob, sew a bit, turn the knob, sew some more, put knob back where it was, examine changes) to find out what does what.

Mmm, I think I pokked the thread tention thing too, my only problem was that adjusting it (even to its extremes) didn't improove anything =(
Still, I shall persever...

I will probably go to kew bridge and then to vauxhall - it seems the easiest option, plus I have a grand distrust of buses. Although it means i'll have to buy yet anothet ticket which pisses me off =(
