We keep a small basket of Maddie's toys in the livingroom. Maddie likes nothing more than to dump these toys all over the floor. She did that this evening about 10 minutes before bedtime and Joe told her that she needed to put them back in the basket or she would go to bed right away

Heh. That reminds me of the time in my adolescent-ish years when Dad asked me to put the wet clothes from the washer into the drier. I was watching TV and I was both grumpy AND lazy - along with the general adolescent-ish disagreeable - and decided to take him way more literally than he intended. I put the wet clothes in the drier, but I didn't bother taking the clean, dry clothes out of it first OR starting it after; I did exactly what he asked and said as much when he caught me out an hour or two later. His reaction was some hybrid cross between extremely ticked off and grudgingly accepting, but I was then hoisted by my own petard because for years after that he took great pleasure in irritating the hell out of me by making sure he narrated every little task of whatever chore he assigned me with long, literal, step-by-step instructions.
