This was so tough to write, but like you say, it felt very necessary to me. I didn't want to gloss over what he did or that it was wrong, but I also wanted to understand it. This was a path that made sense to me, although it certainly wasn't pleasant.
And yes! What would have happened if, instead of thinking, "I should have romantic affection for Brittany but I don't," he had recognized that affection as the possible beginnings of a friendship. I think he would have taken a different path, and a much better one.
