On being a decent looter

I try to be a nice person in dungeons. There are times that I'll want/need something for offspec, but I firmly believe that MS is greater than OS, and so I used to wait to see if anybody rolled need on it, before I would say that I was taking it for offspec, and roll for it.

But now, it doesn't show it anymore. I know it used to be under "Detailed ( Read more... )

Even with the loot window and people waiting to roll there are still mishaps.

I rolled need on a trinket the healer also needed and instead of asking me for it he rage quit the group. It was an intellect trinket of some sort, I would have passed it off to them since upon later inspection their trinkets sucked. Then again I'm the kind of person that walks up to someone in town and hands them pants insisting on no payment or tip, as I just found them off that sha over there and they probably need cleaning anyway.

Hm, the problem I see with your method is that someone else might need it for OS too, but since it's OS, they rolled greed and hoped. Then if you swoop in and say "I'm taking it for OS", they might get a little annoyed. Maybe if you said you wanted it for OS *first* (assuming you're with classes that would have OSs that could use it), it would give anyone else in the group the chance to go, "Oh, I need that for OS too, so if no one needs it for their main spec, lets both roll need for OS."

Personally I think that's going out of your way too much and people roll so fast you wouldn't be done typing half the time before everyone rolled anyway.

As far as I know the method the OP uses is among the most common, if you need something for OS you see if someone with the MS needs it and if they don't it's fair game.
Rolling greed can lose it to people rolling disenchantment, so it doesn't even give you the option to ask for it afterwards when you see nobody needed it. It's not a good idea to roll greed before you know if you could need.

Personally I make a list of gear I'd like, and if I know certain items drop, I inspect the MS person (if going for OS) who would roll if they needed it. If they have better, chances are they won't roll. Otherwise I wait and see what the rolls are - if a MS person doesn't roll need, it's usually pretty fair game... however if someone whispered me and said they were gearing up to play let's say a healer and came in as dps, I'd probably give it to them if it was my off-spec... only because at times I don't even play OS on that toon. I know with my method that I am likely to be done over by someone lying just to get the item, but I figure I didn't really *NEED* the item. If only everyone followed the need / greed system for MS /OS and that disenchanting didn't class as a greed function somehow.

I really hope this makes sense - I just sort of went BLAH with the keyboard and got to the stage I was like TL;DR.
