female Draenei horns

So, I have this idea for my 85 female draenei's character design where she has henna designs on her horns, but I'm having trouble figuring out what her horns are covered in. I've gotten the impression that draenei are actually covered in fur, based on the fur around the tops of their hooves. Would that fur also cover the females' horns? If so, that ( Read more... )

general: just curious

horns in most animals tend to be a continuously growing body part that change a lot. Assuming draenei are like most horned mammals, they have horns that are either dead bone (ie: like deer) so they shed them regularly and regrow them, or they have keratin/fur covered horns that grow continuously, requiring the patterns extended each year.

is henna necessary because you're looking for something semi-permanent?

Either henna or permanently tattooed. Ideally, I'd like them tattooed, but if the horns are constantly growing and being shed, the henna would be more practical.

what could probably work would be the sort of etching done on ivory and bone - either just etched into the bone, or etched in and rubbed with an ink of some kind? since there's no real canonical evidence (I don't think) of draenei horn growth, you could probably go with her just adding onto the tattoos as her horns grow.

The "young" Drae in Azuremyst don't have horns, IIRC? And the little ones at least have smaller horns, or none at all... So they certainly grow in _some_ fashion.

But, as far as I know, there's not canonical statement of whether they're shed and re-grown or if they grow continuously like fingernails or hooves.

I suppose they could grow out to a certain amount and stop, like, say, adult teeth do in humans. Maybe there are baby horns and adult horns! O:D

I actually think the fur on their hooves is unique to their feet, and probably does not cover their whole body. I think it's entirely feasible that they just have hobbit hooves. They wear rings around their tails, but there is no fur overlapping these rings, which, considering the way Blizzard renders worgen and tauren, and that draenei are not done in a similar fashion-this leads me to believe the fur around their hooves is basically just something of an oversight by the design team ( ... )

Agree with this. It's clear from game/concept/promotional art that Draenei aren't furry; imo the hair fringe at the hoofline is probably just a design quirk meant to naturalize their appearance by reminding us of real ungulate anatomy. I think kaelstra's suggestion of bone etching is a great one.

i also agree with the fur only being on their hooves. they are patterned after the classic image of the Devil/goatlike demons/Pan and Satyrs. so only fur on the legs

I've never been under the impression that draenei are supposed to be furry. (That said, trolls are supposed to be covered with fine colored fur, which is the source of their apparent skin tones, but the in-game textures and most official art doesn't reflect that.) See above for comments on how actual horned mammal horns can work, but I have some additional thoughts ( ... )

This might actually be more valid than my own response. When you roll a death knight draenei, some of the skin tone options for the female draenei include horns with obvious rot on the tips. I can't imagine that horns (or bone) would actually actively show signs of decay that looks like decaying, rotting skin, so perhaps they are, in fact, covered with flesh.

Suggestion: What if they're like giraffe's 'horns'? I've just looked them up and are actually called 'ossicones' (huh!) and made from ossified cartilage and covered in skin and fur (except males, which bald on top of their ossicones). On draenai, they might be completely furless?
