Just a heads-up for the privacy-minded, since I didn't see this anywhere:

WoW does not yet support battletags, so if you add someone's battletag to your friendslist while you're in WoW, it will link you via RealID instead.A guildie of mine discovered this by accident yesterday when he was in WoW and added a mutual friend's battletag to his list, ( Read more... )

Yeah, the only thing the Battletags are good for is so you don't have to give out your WoW account email. Still a very good idea to set up and use if you use RealID.

I believe you can change what name shows on your battletag on the site. Not 100% sure and can't check from work. Can anyone confirm this?

You'll continue seeing the battletag if you added it while playing Diablo 3, but if you add the battletag while you're in WoW, the real name shows up instead, since WoW doesn't support battletags yet.

I do not EVER recommend doing this! Do not change your Battle.net to a dummy name!

If your account ever becomes compromised, you are required to provide proof of ownership of the account, which includes things like ID. If you have a fake name on your account, you cannot prove it is yours and you may not get your account back.

Unless it's an account you legitimately do not care about, never put fake names on your Battle.net account!

My apologies if I misread your comment and you meant changing your battletag username instead. Shortly before D3 released, they flagged all accounts as able to rename their battletag if desired and shortly after D3 released, they did it again. You probably used that free rename token or whatever, they'll be offering a paid change in the future if I remember correctly. However, if you're really concerned, it might be worth a call to Blizz to try and sort it out due to privacy concerns.

You mean you can add battletags to your friends list in WoW instead of having to log in to diablo to do it? I shall have to remember that, means I don't need to log into Diablo anymore.

Yeah, just that the real name will show up instead of the battletag name, so if privacy's an issue, you may want to keep this in mind.

I wish we could get rid of RealID altogether and just use Battletags. The systems seem redundant.

I'm pretty sure that's what they plan on doing in the future, it's just not fully implemented or fixed yet.

from what i've read, realid was something they wanted to roll out with pandaria but had it ready in time to test earlier.

tbh i feel like that's BS and battletags were put together when people pointed out how horrible and invasive realid is. it blows my mind how short-sighted this company is. like... did they legitimately think people would only want to add people they knew IRL? i only have four IRL friends who play. get your shit together, blizz. honestly. -_-

I haven't tried entering a battletag from the WoW add-a-friend interface, but I know if you add a battletag via the Diablo 3 interface, you only get their battletag. It displays on your list like a realID friend, as in you can see them on all games and what toons they're on, but you do not see their real name.

So if you have D3, add the battletag through the D3 interface instead for the time being to have it work properly.

Yep, battletags work just fine if added from within D3, just not within WoW as yet, which is what I wanted to warn people about.
