I heal using mouse over macros, and I usually set the tank as my Focus when I'm healing. I bound Set Focus to the Home key. I don't use macros to automatically target the tank but if I did I guess an example would be:

/cast [target=focus] greater heal

This is pretty much what I do. I'm a shaman healer, so I have a macro to cast earth shield on my focus. I use clique for easy mouseover macros. (You can use it to bind your heals to alt/shift/ctrl-left and right clicks, which should give you some extra keybinds!)

Well, I don't want to use my mouse, at all, so that's kind of troublesome. I also have to say that I enjoy being able to heal; this far; without addons. And, I have had grid and clique in earlier UI's, I never understood either of them.

Grid has a huge learning curve because there's no config mode, but Clique works with any unit frames, including the default ones. You just set your spells to different clicks, so when you click on someone's unit frame, it casts it on that target.

I can't help much with keybinds, but for the tank issue, why not just set the tank as your focus? If you're going attonement spec disc, it's good to have the tank as your focus anyways to target off them.

Thank you, and yes I'm planning on speccing atonement.

However, I don't know how to set a focus. I've tried /focus %t, /focus name /setfocus %t and /setfocus name, nothing have worked ... Ever.

Just target who you want to focus and type /focus. It's never failed for me unless you have an addon messing with your commands.

Oh, well I did try but nothing happened. I don't think that my UI would mess with that, but I will try again the next time I play :)

Have you looked into a click-to-cast addon like Healbot/Clique/Vuhdo, or would that be really difficult with a mousepad?

I raided through much of Wrath with a mousepad. Clique works just dandy. :)

It would be very difficult yes, and I would prefer playing without addons. So I'm planning on doing things without them. (I do have my UI and MRP and some stuff, but I don't have anything for fighting solemnly; or in this case healing)

why don't shift/alt modifiers work for you? I don't use alt a lot but shift works great for me.

I usually use shift + Q, E, A, D, R, F, S, tab, sometimes space bar (when I'm out of options lol)
shift + 1, 2, 3, 4
1, 2, 3 ,4
`
shift + `

playing without a mouse sounds like a bitc... very difficult thing. would it be possible for you to get a mouse? I imagine you are playing on a laptop?

Well, point is that I can't stretch my fingers that way. Alt works fairly well, because then I press my thumb on alt and a finger on the number, but shift only works if I have a short nail on my little finger, which I never have...

Actually, I'm doing fairly well since I'm used to it. I do play on a laptop, but I'm saving up money for a desktop and additions. Planning on getting a Razer Naga if possible with my economy.

Oh, I cannot say enough good things about the Razer Naga, I am in love with it!

Yes, I have heard a lot of nice things too, and if I did have a naga that would make me able to basically play even my main without a keyboard, if I'm correct that there's 12 buttons.

I use Tukui which has a grid like set-up for raid and party. It can be moved where you want, so it is always just to the left of my nameplate, which is middle of the screen at the bottom. I use mouseover macros:

#showtooltip
/cast [target=mouseover] Power Word: Shield (or whatever other spell)

I do know there is a 'target of target' macro, let me see if I can dig it up...Can't find it, but this might work...

Click on tank and set as focus, now make this macro...

/assist focus

I do not play attonment and really have no dps (tank and or healer here), so I am not sure, but I think that will target your focuses target and you can start casting holy fire and smite.

I use an /assist focus macro for my DPS toons, so I can definitely see how that would work for atonement disc priests too. :D

The macros sound awesome thanks. And yes, the /assist works on focus as well. :)

Yeah, with the mouseover, it's easy healing. I like to keep the boss as my target so I can pay attention to his health and know when to pop my cooldowns based on where he is and how fast his health is decreasing. With mouseovers I do not ever have to leave my current target and just go heal happy.
