Is dual-boxing in late-twenty Battlegrounds a horrible idea?

Jan 20, 2012 20:00

I would love to learn to dual-box in the battlegrounds (not Warsong Gulch!), but I'm not sure how many people would descend upon me with sharpened knives for even trying ( Read more... )

If you can do real dual-boxing, you can be a force to be reckoned with. Having another toon on follow with the occasional macro'd move is not real dual-boxing and nobody should subject their team to that.

AFAIK dual-boxing (actually dual boxing) is not against the ToS, but I think you do need some kind of program or something to pull it off.

That said, the 5-boxed DK squad that used to be on Arathor-H was a serious force to be reckoned with. That's five death grips, you were a goner really fast-- and I can't remember if they were all blood or frost but I swear they were blood, so great survivability on top of that. Dx

Well it sounds like you are truly dual-boxing. A lot of folks THINK they are dual-boxing when in reality they just have two windows open and one toon on follow on the other.

Real dual-boxing usually has the two+ toons moving together, using the same move at the same time, et cetera.

How exactly are you dual-boxing? I have more than one account but I never tried dual-boxing for real before. I'm not quite sure to figure out how to do it, though. What kinds of macros are you making and how do you make them? And what is keyclone? An addon? Curious now.

Either way I love dualboxers in battlegrounds when they know what they're doing. The five-boxing DKs had a priest pocket healer with them and they won Tol Barad EVERY TIME. (We had like 15 people vs. those 6 and could NEVER beat them, was terrible.)

I use Keyclone (one time cost of $20) but at least one of the popular ones is freeware, never really looked in it. I picked keyclone since it was the only program at the time specifically noted by WoW mods to be acceptable. Maybe I'm overly paranoid, but I think I'd have a heart attack if I was banned! :P *grin ( ... )

Personally I dislike dual boxers in my smaller BGs, they almost always cause or heavily contribute to a loss, as they're pretty easy to take apart if the other teams aren't stupid and provide much less than multiple people filling those same spots would. I tend to afk out when I see it, others probably will give you crap for it, up to you if you can deal with that.

If you do do it I wouldn't suggest shadow priests for low levels, they're not very mobile and are very squishy when they don't have a lot of resilience. Although apparently mind spike > shadow word death spamming shadow priests are effective at higher levels. The only class I've seen really work at lower levels is multiboxed hunters tbh.

*nods* I have a pair of hunters, but I feel like they are overkill for BGs, just too much ranged firepower in a coordinated strike there. I want to learn to play, not just nuke people from orbit. :P

Figured the priests would be more challenging, but I was also looking for the larger battlegrounds where it would be less of a hobble for my teammates. I was hoping a 15 vs 15 would be okay-- but maybe I should hold out for the 40 vs 40? :)

What level are you talking about, just from the post I assumed it was lower levels and that excludes av?

I *hate* them in WSG, that's where they really noticably lose games. I don't even notice them in AV unless I literally walk into them, I can't think of any I've come across in ab tbh.

And honestly I thouht the whole idea of dual boxing in pvp was to nuke from orbit as fast as possible, any other way and a dual boxer shouldn't win in an otherwise equal match.

Yeah there is /no way/ I'd try them on a 10 vs 10, there's not enough gold in the world to bribe me to try that! *grin*

I'm 25 now and I was looking at AB, but if a 15/15 is going to be bad, I can put it off until I hit 45-- I just was hoping a 15/15 would give me enough wiggle room that they wouldn't turn on me instantly. :P

And I guess my personal goal for PvP would be to turn the pair into a different use of the same tool-- I wouldn't be as good as two guildie shadow priests playing solo, but I'd be better than two uncoordinated ones (or at least equal).

There's some obvious disadvantages to having one person behind the wheel-- but I'm also putting a lot more time and effort into learning how to play them than I think most of the casual PvPers at this level do? But I'm really not sure on that, since I never played low levels. :(

I figure if I've learned to play them while walking on a treadmill, then I can do just about anything if I put my mind to it! lol :D

I would almost be tempted to do dual disc and smiteheal my allies; from my experience at low levels shadow just OOMs way too quickly to be useful. Only real problem would be clashing PW:Shields if you have them set to heal the same person when you directly heal...

My paired 'Help Them' keybinds are setup to 1: Renew/Shield then 2: Flash Heal/Renew and by the time I cycle back to 1 they are normal ready for another shield. ^_^

I've had much fun randomly fort/shield/heal'ing other leveling folks when they aren't expecting it... hehehe

I think it will just come down to how good you are. Players in battlegrounds are very reluctant to 'carry' people. I've seen good dual boxers in battlegrounds sometimes (I remember a WG actually where a four shammie boxer decimated everything) but more often I've seen ones that are a hindrance to their team mates and are treated accordingly.
I suppose you won't know until you try it out.
(btw I am very impressed you were able to jury rig it so you could walk on a treadmill and play wow at the same time I don't even know how I'd go about setting that up).

Right now my plan is to spend the rest of this week drafting and testing in PvE my PvP macros and keybinds. Then I'll hop in a BG and if it goes horribly, I'll just have my backup toon leave the BG-- that way someone else will be in to replace them if things take a nosedive ( ... )
