I don't know a lot on this subject, but I know that around 2200-2500 regen was considered adequate and comfortable for healing FL. 6656 regen seems extraordinarily high to me but I may be way off base.
I personally probably wouldn't go off pure numbers but rather take into account how comfortable I felt with my regen during boss encounters. If you feel comfortable that you're not going OOM, and are using your cooldowns efficiently (shadowfiend, hymn of hope- e.g. timing SF so you can use it 2-3 times in a fight) and not having any problems going OOM, then I think it'd be safe to reforge spirit into something else.
Since I am not an expert on these matters and may be dead wrong, I'd like to point you in the direction of the priest or healing forums because those posters are very helpful.
I haven't needed to use shadowfiend (almost put form) in...a very long time. Hm. Maybe the cat lady in whats-it-called, back when I wasn't quite geared for it.
I don't raid, so, there's that.
I pop expansive soul whenever I feel I have to use gheal any great amount, and that bumps my combat regen up into the 6500 region.
Boss fights...I usually end at around 75/80% mana. Sometimes higher. The bitch who silences, I'm almost at full at the end.
Btw, to keep her from silencing you, stand behind someone else. I usually aim for either a hunter (if there's one in the group) or go for the tank if they are actually staying rather still on her. She throws the knife in a direction, whoever gets hit first is the one who gets silenced (if a caster).
The numbers you see people throwing around are referring to the characters unbuffed/stationary regen. If you're just standing around in a capital city and have 2200+ as the number for 'Combat Regen' on your paperdoll you're fine for heroics.
To change stat values on Mr Robot use the Stat Weight Editor in the bottom right corner of the screen, it will let you input a spirit hard cap at which point it will stop telling you to reforge to spirit.
This is very nice for me to know. My not-very-geared holy priest is sitting at around 3k combat regen unbuffed because I took the "everything with spirit on it!" gear advice very seriously.
maybe if I keep telling myself that my stats aren't horrible, I'll be less afraid of randoms.
Yeah, that's not the number people mean when they say 2200 etc, they're talking about just you, not casting, no buffs/procs etc. See what your 'combat regen' number is on your paperdoll when you're just standing around, that's the number everyone's talking about. I would easily go over 6k in raid on my Shaman when I was at 2200 combat regen when I was just standing around as well, but that didn't actually make me 6k, I was still 2200 for the purposes of any discussion on mana/healing.
But that said if you're finding you have too much mana then switch your reforging/gemming around. A lot of healing comes down to circumstance (raid comps/group comps/fights etc) and personal playstyle, adjust your toon until you're happy with where she is/how she's performing, you sould like you could afford to drop some regen for throughput from your comments.
Numbers aren't quite the same as they were this morning - not sure what the difference is, but I remember it was 6656 cause I thought it was 6665, and that particular set of numbers makes me giggle
It also depends a lot on what content you're doing and what spec you are.
Like, my priest has been doing LFR as holy and she... doesn't use heal. CoH, ProM, renew, GH, PoH, DH, sure. Heal is kind of a waste of time unless the damage is completely negligible. So it may be time for you to move on to more challenging content where you're having to chain-cast more expensive heals. =)
