Finding your avoidance?

Okay, Wow Ladies I have a question.

I’ve read up at Maintankadin, found a little bit more helpful info at Tentonhammer, and I am still so confused. So to keep it as painfully obviously simple as possible,  so I can finally understand…

How do you find your overall avoidance?

I play a paladin tank, and I am HIGHLY confused.  I know there’s got to be ( Read more... )

Well, 100 - 59.6 = 40.4, but that' doesn't explain it if the boss starts at 102.4.

isn't that modifier added after the chance to hit calculation is made? I always thought it was

Not a clue, I was just trying to show where the 40.6% most likely came from.

100% - 59.6% = 40.6%

You were both coming to the same number, just from opposite directions. The boss has a 59.6% chance to miss you, so he has a 40.6% chance to hit you.

Okay so does that mean that we just toss the 102.4% right out the damn window, and just take it out of a 100% chance?

Well, 102.4% is a strange way to express things, because "the boss hits you every time" = 100%. It's not possible for him to hit you more than the number of times he tries to hit you, as 102.4% seems to suggest. I'm not sure how you translate a 102.4% chance to hit into a brain-wrappable example.

I believe that the 102.4% was something that mattered moreso when Crushing Blows were an option on the attack table and you had to be Defense Capped to ensure you were Uncrushable while you were balancing other stats to push Crits and Hits off the table.

If you're looking for a quick way to find out what your avoidance is, there's actually a macro/script for that. I found one for shield tanks that runs thusly:

/run ChatFrame1:AddMessage(format("Target 102.4%% - Current: %.2f%%\n Total Avoid: %.2f%% Block: %.2f%%",GetDodgeChance()+GetParryChance()+GetBlockChance()+5,GetParryChance()+GetDodgeChance()+5,GetBlockChance()))

This means that you will be hit normally by the boss roughly 40.6% of the time. “

Now. I got out a calculator and added up those 4 numbers that Tenton provided. I ended up with 59.4, not 40.6.

That's because you will be HIT 40.6% of the time, and your Avoidance will be 59.4%.

You just mentally misread what he was saying, is all.

I needed that spelled out to say, you'll be hit x amount if your avoidance is y and this is how you get that.
