Awesomest conversation ever

So I'm in Twilight Highlands doing my dailies (I'm a druid, male troll,... one of those that always offers to invite instead of just taking kegs out from others) and I get a random whisper asking for help with CoC. Cool beans, I fly on over and someone had already started it, half the group is dead so I just wait until they wipe it up and then buff ( Read more... )

general: boys are awesome

i've never thought people were assuming i'm male when they say "man" or "dude"... I guess because people say it in real life as well. "mate" on the other hand... ARGH. :/

Mate is just the AU version of man/dude, no?

I know people who very much dislike man/dude, what's the diff between that and mate? They're just generic assuming "hey you" terms.

I say mate all the time to everyone, and people say it to me. It's not anywhere near as gendered as man/dude = / At least not here.

Same here. To me "man" has always been equivalent to "dude," which to me is totally gender-neutral, like how "you guys" has become. XD A generational thing maybe? I call all my poor guildies "man" all the time, bwaha.

Your conversation was really cute, though, OP. I'm assuming this is on WrA since I know you play there. Almost everyone I run into on that server is so polite. :)

It is a generational thing. My grandparents have a complete loathing for all three of those statements, and they start the blame with "you guys."

Yes, it was on WrA. The conversation actually took place while I was in Uldum (doing my other dailies) since I hearthed before he apologized lol

He'd JUST transferred to the server too... great intro hey?

I confess to the bad habit of using "guys" but that's generally to guildies, who I know!

The thing I always find (probably somewhat irrationally!)slightly irritating is someone I don't know saying to me "Hi" and following it directly up with "where are you from?" especially if they do that in say. I usually respond "Darnassus" or similar, depending on what character I'm playing. And I generally get a "That's not what I mean" in response!

How weird to get a "where are you from?" from random strangers. Do you play a hot blood elf? Maybe they're trying to get next to you... Very strange.

I've had it a few times, and no! I play an average looking night elf! But I do suspect that it might be the start of them trying to chat me up. On the basis of my female character.....which I find VERY odd indeed.

asking location (especially after age/sex!) was a standard greeting/icebreaker/get to you know question in chat rooms back in the day. Like 10-15 years ago. It's weird to see it now, but it was super popular back then.

I say "Thanks, man!" to men and women alike. Similarly, I have (female) friends who will refer to me as "man" in that context as well (and I'm female, too). A regional thing, maybe?

That said, your story was adorable. :)

I thought it was adorable too, he's a really nice fellow (we have chatted a few times since then too). I made a huge edit to my OP after the explosion in my inbox!

Just skimmed your edit. So we're clear, I know I, for one, never thought you were being intentionally rude or offensive. Your whole exchange was obviously very good-natured. :)

I say "thanks, bro/man/dude/broski" to everyone, male or female characters, or people in real life.
