You're supposed to keep everybody sort of "maintained" with HW, and more use of Riptide, and if you REALLY need to, use big heals like GHW and the cool new one. The fast one. Surge or whatever?
Gotta learn to pre-emptively heal. That is, cast your maintenance heal expecting damage, and if it doesn't come, cancel the cast. I do it by moving.
And the DPS and tanks have to learn to minimize the damage they take. Including using their own methods to heal themselves. Hybrid classes, bandages, handy spells like Lifeblood and Gift of the Naaru, etc.
HW does so little right now at level 84. Maybe when I get more spellpower at level 85 gear, I'll see a difference. Because of how huge people's health pools are, it's a mere splash in the bucket.
On top of that, a lot of players don't do their own self-heal tricks or get out of the AoE damage zones or even eat after a battle. They wait for the healer to top them off so they can go running back in. In WotLK, I could take care of that sorta thing easily for people, but not anymore.
Then let them die. Everyone has to actually try now, instead of healers with nearly unlimited mana regen just chain healing or tossing riptides/earthshields on the tank. Unfortunately, healing in this expansion requires a very thick skin. :( They will start to understand, though.
I use HW all the time. Absolutely all the time. It is my spell that I use when I'm trying to regen, when I have to top someone off, and when I'm balancing the tank out. If you don't use HW you will go oom and it will be very, very fast. All fights start out with me Riptiding the tank and doing HW on him and continuing that rotation until I deem that someone needs more healing. It is doubly good as it also heals me for a bit (though not much) but it is definitely helpful.
It really doesn't get drastically better or anything. You just have to expect to cast HW constantly on the tank, supplemented by Unleash Elements/Riptide combos and/or Nature's Swiftness/GHW combos. SOmetimes the tank won't take a whole lot of damage and you can briefly stop casting HW, but usually you have to be casting it quite a bit.
If the DPS is getting really beaten by AoE crap (and it's not their fault), plop down a Healing Rain. Sorry...healing is just more difficult now. : / There are no big secrets revealed once you get to 85.
Yeah this is what I do. I sometime cast a Healing Surge in between the 2 HW to bump the tank's health back up if it needs it but my mana and spirit can support that now, it couldn't always.
There was a thread on the WoW forums in the healer lot that was SUPER helpful to me. As a Holy Priest, I'm always wanting intellect out the whazoo. I had done that well before Cata, as I just enjoyed being superwoman with heals and didn't much worry about regen. Now I have to stack a lot of both Int and Spirit
( ... )
just remember that you don't need to keep everyone topped off 100% of the time. its fine for people to be around 50% hp! if they're playing right, then they shouldn't die. It becomes a lot easier once you learn the fights, as then you know when and how the damage is going to come, so you can plan your heals accordingly. Generally, when i enter a HC for the first time(I play resto druid), i expect to wipe a few times as i'm learning how the damage comes in a new fight. Or, if not wipe, then go oom in the last 20% of the boss and use bandages to heal people :p It's so much easier when you do a fight the second or third time, as you know how the damage will play out then.
you can't panic though. If you see a lot of damage incoming, do not panic, as panic healing is generally the biggest mana drain
