Christian Bale was almost Superman in "Batman vs. Superman" film

MTV discovered via an interview with Wolfgang Peterson that back in 2003 Christian Bale was very close to being Superman in the never-completed "Batman vs. Superman" movie:

You know, as overjoyed as I would be about a Batman vs. Superman movie, if they were looking at Brendan Fraser and Josh Hartnett to play Superman, then I'm glad it fell through. I'd rather wait ten years for a good movie then get a mediocre or bad one tomorrow.

Uggh. My Google-fu told me that Ashton Kutcher was also considered for Superman. Who were they thinking of for Batman? Eminem? The guy that plays Jay, of Jay and Silent Bob fame? They were pretty big around 2003, right?

Actually, I can't really see Bale as Superman either, but that could just be because I'm used to him being such an awesome Batman now. If they don't stick with Routh for the next Superman movie, I really do hope they decide to go with an unknown. Superman is an iconic role, and I think that big-name actors might bring too many expectations and preconceived notions to the table. Then again, Bale did make a fabulous Batman, and he was hardly an unknown. I guess time will tell on this one.
