A Camping Trip

With strict orders from Haruhi not to enter the girl’s tent under any circumstances, Kyon unzipped his tent and climbed in, taking care to remove his muddy boots along the way. Typical… It was all Haruhi’s idea for them to go camping. Something about ‘finding demons in the woods’. Of course, one thing had lead to another and they were now spending the night on a boggy moor. Thankfully Nagato had found some sturdy terrain for them to camp on, but nothing could be done about the thick layer of mud that clung to their clothes. Not in front of Haruhi anyway.

And to make things worse, he had to share a tent with Koizumi, of all people!

“Is everything all right out there?” asked Koizumi, sitting up in his sleeping bag and smiling. “I thought I heard Suzumiya-san shouting.”

“Everything’s fine,” replied Kyon, unzipping his waterproof jacket. The entire thing was caked with foul-smelling mud. “How did you stay so clean anyway?” Koizumi had stayed suspiciously mud-free throughout the walk. Only his boots and the rim of his trouser legs were caught.

“Well, I didn’t walk straight through the puddles,” he pointed out happily, “and you kept insisting on retrieving Asahina-san whenever she fell over, so the two of you became extremely dirty as a result.”

Indeed, Asahina-san had become so muddy that Haruhi had insisted on giving her the emergency clothes. It would’ve been sweet if they hadn’t changed in the usual manner.

Kyon shuffled into his sleeping bag and zipped it up. Koizumi’s torch was on, and it illuminated the inside of the tent softly. The smell of grass and mud didn’t match the fading blue fabric. Kyon lent back and looked up at the tent roof, watching a small spider crawl along the supporting pole.

He heard Koizumi sigh, and Kyon glanced towards the other boy. He was lying on his back too, gazing not upwards but straight at him. Hang on; he wasn’t this close a moment ago…

“Suzumiya-san seems occupied,” he said quietly, “so we shouldn’t encounter any closed spaces any time soon.”

“I’m happy for you,” muttered Kyon.

“Even so, we should stay on guard,” continued Koizumi. “She has her heart set on finding demons, and if she wishes for something akin to a demon attack during the night, we may find ourselves in danger.”

“Haruhi wouldn’t do that,” answered Kyon. He shivered slightly. The outside wind was creeping in through the gaps in the fabric.

“True. So long as Asahina-san and Nagato-san stay with her in the tent, nothing strange or unusual should occur.” Koizumi must’ve moved closer, because Kyon could feel the other boy’s body heat pressing against him through the sleeping bag and his breath brushing against his cheek. Gross.

“It’s beneficial to sleep close together when outside in case of hypothermia,” said Koizumi, sounding a bit too happy. “Shall we turn in for the night? I’ll turn off the torch.”

There was a loud click, and darkness submerged the tent. Kyon closed his eyes and fell asleep, wondering what insanity lay in wait for him the next day.

Koizumi stayed awake, resting his head on an unsuspecting Kyon’s shoulder. He wasn’t smiling.
