so here we have blastaar the living bomb-burst - can you guess who created him, i wonder...? ( - in case you can't: it was jack kirby, as usual - w/stan lee on the dialogue )

for some reason i like the idea of blastaar singing this song: " if you can't look inside you - find out who i am too - be in the position to make me feel - so damned unpretty ( Read more... )

Blastaar! Yay! paulcurtis September 6 2007, 21:36:26 UTC
FF #62 was (I think) the first FF comic that I bought with the intention of reading it regularly (I'd enjoyed the early FF reprints, and found a few scattered issues completely incomprehensible, so with #62 I was planning to just stick with it until I jolly well understood it!)

So I have nothing but kind feelings for Blastaar. Long may he blast!

" I was planning to just stick with it until I jolly well understood it! " - i never had a similar problem w/the lee & kirby stuff - having been reading reprints in british marvel gomics that started w/ff #2 ( skrulls* ) - but i remember feeling EXACTLY the same way about steve gerber's defenders ( i think #20 was the first issue i saw )

* i've got the kind feelings for these poor blighters

Do you read Ultimate Fantastic Four? I think Carey is very good at playing off how many of Reed's genius ideas are, in practice, incredibly bloody stupid, bless him. And let's not get into the whole Negative Zone prison business over in 616...

i haven't read any of carey's yet ( - i'll probly give 'em a go if my library gets 'em in ) - but i did enjoy mark millar's ultimate ffs ( despite the g.land "artwork" )

ps. if anyone is acting out of character = they are all SKRULLS!

I agree: this is a great drawing, an inspiring drawing no less!

I'm guessing some lesser god came up with Burster and Niggler as Blastaar's son and his wife - its staggering brilliance is almost worthy of a Gruenwald or even a DeFalco

I've always been puzzled by the existence of Blastaar and of Nitro - like Zarrko and Kang sort-of

- THANK YOU!

i dunno abt the wife ( she's listed in the 1983 official handbook of the marvel universe so it could be gruenwald ) - but burstaar = a peter david greation from his recentish captain marvel gomic ( a spinoff from avengers forever ) ( capt.marvel = genis vell, son of mar vell & elysius )

whereas blastaar blasts, nitro gompletely explodes* afaik - so it's a different schtick really

this made me laugh out loud

I remember doing a spoof page called Forget The Twinkies wayyy back before Geoff Lamprey introduced us all to each other - I'd forgotten all about it until I read this masterpiece!

I enjoyed Nitro's insane idea for world domination

does the 1983 Marvel Universe include the ludicrous explanation of Cyclops' power beams? (light-based aliens escaping from another dimension)

...so Scott is like an inverse Nameless One from Dr Strange: their eyebeams are moe or less constant with occasional intervals wheras his are occasional with long intervals

I think your theory about the plot for X-Men #53 is very likely but I know of nothing to verify it with (sadly Arnold Drake = hovis quite recently)

must go - a big lady calls

xmen #53 was such a teeny part of arnold drake's distinguished career - even if was still with us
i doubt if he'd remember such minutia

are you mixing up the nameless ones with the mindless ones? - i think you mean these fellas, anyway:

( wld love to see a mindless ones hostess twinkies ad )

( or a blastaar one )

You have totally got to get back into doing comics again (you did used to do small press stuff, didnt you?). I love this style of art.
Another winner today

ta for the kind words - i must admit i'm enjoying doing the odd drawing once a week or so ( - whereas a "proper" gomic w/a story & panel to panel gontinuity etc = too much like hard work )

" I learn a wee bit more about the Marvel U everytime! " - you realise this might not be a goob thing? - it's a slippery slope...
