Auckland is semi-tropical climate to it won't be as cold as other parts of NZ and certainly not as cold as Canada! I would suggest taking a winter jacket, not a think ski one but certainly a warmer one than a light one as in July the winds can be bitterly cold (thank Antarctica!) and very wet.
The Viaduct and Queen St are littered with restaurants and are great social areas.
As for tourist things to do, I recommended heading to Waiheke Island or Rangitoto Island for a day trip. If you want a unique kiwi experience and are a bit of an adrenaline junkie, definitely do the Sky Tower Jump or bungee jumping off the bridge. The Sky Tower is a must - great views of Auckland and the restaurant/bar up there is great.
As for souvenirs - anything Maori is a must. You will find plenty of tikis (little plastic Maori statue things) and Maori dolls. Also anything with a kiwi on it or even penguins etc. Don't we are a very patriotic lot and it will be easy to find uniquely kiwi souvenirs.
Go to Kelly Tarlton's Antarctic Adventure if you have a chance! I don't know - i lived in auckalnd for 1 year and found it muggy most of the year with only a slight chill in winter. I would say a light jacket is fine with a sweater maybe? light layers! don't bring a bulky coat. but being from calgary maybe i have a higher cold tolerance?
I'll have three days there after the two days of travelling. It's a trip from Air New Zealand to try out their new planes and I wasn't allowed to extend my trip. :(
Thanks for the advice! I think I'll leave my down jacket at home, and bring lots of layers!

This is a good site for venues and stuff about gay scene in Auckland, other than that I not sure what the gay scene is like there.

yeah I'd say so! I just left in May and was freezing my ass off. Its not so much the temp but the damp.
Check out Ponsonby. Its the eclectic intown neighborhood with all the great cafes and bars without the tourists of Queen St and downtown.
