The Cu Chi tunnnels are worth visiting, about 45 minutes drive from Saigon. Within the city the war museum was very interesting and moving. I spent 10 days travelling Vietnam from north to south last month, so can perhaps answer questions about other places (where we spent more time) if you want.

That would be brilliant. May I add you and send messages that way? Or would you prefer to correspond via this post?

I concur about the War Museum, even if I didn't like Saigon that much. I spent about ten days there too last year, but by far the best place was Halong Bay, about two hours outside of Hanoi, if I remember right. Do it--spend 3 days doing it. One of the most gorgeous experiences ever!

I posted a blog entry about it--it's kinda long, but it might be helpful:

Have fun!

I was in Northern Vietnam in July and really liked it. I usually don't like cities, but Hanoi was a surprise and delight, and held my interest for a few days. An overnight or 2-night trip to Halong Bay is obligatory: very touristy, but enjoyable and beautiful nonetheless. I've heard great things about Hoi An as well, but I didn't have the time to go :(
