Ethiopia and UAE

I'll be going on holiday in Ethiopia at the end of this contract in South Sudan, beginning in two weeks. I've got plans to travel with a friend based in Awasa to the north of the country; we've been toying with the idea of meeting in Addis heading north to Axum, then south to Lalibela and onto Gondar. I've toyed with the idea of visiting the ( Read more... )

How long do you have in Ethiopia? Omo needs a decent amount of time to do it justice, not to mention a jeep and guide etc that takes the cost up. That said, I didn't get there, so I can't really say ( ... )

Thanks so much for the insights -- I'm still awaiting details on my debriefing, which will inform the time I can spend traveling, but I sense it will either be a northern-historical route, or the southern/western options, and not both. Cheers!

You're welcome. Yeah both would be a bit ambitious. I spent 3 weeks there and did a half-loop of the north (Addis-Bahir Dar-Lalibela-Addis), a side trip east to Harar and then headed down to the Kenya border via Awasa, Arba Minch, Konso, Yabello and Moyale. Not having to return to Addis helped immensely but it still wasn't nearly enough time. I discounted Omo from the get-go for reasons stated above, but I had wanted to try a route south through Bale NP and found I didn't have time (or willing drivers. Something about bandits which I suppose is not unexpected due to the proximity of Somalia on that side...still, Gambella isn't recommended either and you've been there...)
You'll probably think it's bliss compared to Sudan, but the distances are long and take even longer, especially in the south.

I had a quick look at your journal - what is it you are doing in Sudan? I'd love to get out there, seems like a friendly stunning country.
Have a great trip and take care!

as it turns out, i didn't. but our plan was to take a local flight from bole airport. there are package tours available and booking agents at most of the nicer hotels in addis that can help you plan.

Ah, thank you for the info. My friends and I are looking to take a trip there, and we're kinda scoping out places that can get us there.
