I've only been to Playa del Carmen as part of a cruise, and it was just our dropoff to go to the ruins at Tulúm, which are pretty neat because they're right on the water...enjoy!

playa del carmen is lovely, and waaaay less touristy then nearby cancun...

recommendations:
Cueva de Chango - on the dirt road at the end of Calle 38 for banana pancakes and papaya shakes :)

you can take a ferry to cozumel and go snorkeling

The ruins are all a drive or trip from there. Take the ferry to Cozumel and go snorkeling or diving...or rent a scooter and tool around the south end of the island...divine, remote aaahhhh! There are ruins there so with enough gas you can do that. Maps are available.

Chechen Itza and Tulum are all doable from Play Del Carmen...ask ahead. Xelha )shellha is a neat place to do some snorkeling and is just south of Play Del Carmen.

Enjoy. There are internet cafes as well with cheap, fast access.

Cruise ships stop near the ferry landing at Cozumel, but once you get away from that area, it's lovely.
