Absolutely! Most of my very early drafts get written by hand. I have lots and lots of little spiral notebooks full of scenes and me talking to myself about my books. I think it's the same reason you give -- I can take them anywhere and get something done. Though there may also be something about the physical feel of the pen moving on paper. Then I start editing as I type things into the computer.
You're definitely onto something with that physical feel of the pen on paper. I moved to mostly keyboarding when I started to work on reporting, because I was getting a bad writers' cramp, but now I really like being able to mix it up.
I use notebooks to jot down ideas and scenes when I'm away from home. When I'm at the computer I have a notepad on oneside of the keyboard that I use to jot down sentences and dialogue that come to me, but don't belong in the scene I'm working on. And on the other side of the keyboard I keep a stack of index cards which I use to jot down scene ideas. It's faster than opening a document and better than letting the flash of inspiration pass by.
Wow, that's way organized! I like it, even though the space beside my keyboard is way too cluttered with reporters notebooks and cards with contacts for me to work it well. Maybe when I can take over BDs bedroom in a couple years I can have a creative-writing-only space and give your method a whirl.
