This was prompted by arcaedia 's post this morning. I spent from 8 am until 1 pm clickety-clickety-clicketying away, while I wasn't on the phone with sources and sometimes while I was, and I ended up feeling (or freeling, as I first typed) a bit frazzled (hmm, was I freeling fazzled--oh yeah!). I enjoyed your post, Kathy, esp. the bit about the process being so satisfying. You've got me thinking about why I write (shades of George Orwell--I recall reading a piece he wrote on this topic for my A levels). I think I write because it's so darned challenging and so very difficult. And humbling, esp. when I think I've written something good and, no, it's not good enough.... Anyway, you've given me a fresh perspective: perhaps I should think more about the process and less about writing just to get published.

I'm glad you brought up Orwell. I started reading his essay a year or so ago and then lost track of it (no A levels, alas, which do seem to concentrate the mind wonderfully). I've now relocated my copy and intend to finish that reading.
