I bet many grateful prayers were sent about that stable mug of coffee. Papers, pens, etc, annoying, yes; but coffee is very very bad. I always get quite devout at such moments.
You're right about the prayers. They were also sent, because things slid in layers, and because the pen jar, which was decorated by BD when she was in elementary school didn't break.
My favorite coffee+computer story goes back to my days on a non-profit after-school program, when we received one set of minutes that were partially typed, followed by the hand-written "at this point the guinea pig jumped out of my lap and knocked my coffee onto the keyboard." That one has become the standard against which I measure other physical computer disasters.
