Reading Raves: I Shall Wear Midnight

Thursday evening I did something I need to do more often--curl up with a good book during prime time. The book: Terry Pratchett's I Shall Wear Midnight, which I won from HarperTeen about a month ago. I'd been saving it for the perfect moment, because I wanted to be able to savor the end of the Tiffany Aching series. Tiffany appeals to me in the ( Read more... )

Great review! I am SO looking forward to this book. My library should have it on order, but it will be awhile before it shows up. My name is first, though!

I've started reading this one, and to be honest, I'm finding it slow-starting, which is a bit different. Also, the very adult situations at the beginning (that poor 13-yo pregnant girl!) gave it a much more serious air from the get-go. But I will pick it up and finish it now, having read this.

Also, I didn't realize it was the last one ever of Tiffany's books - I don't recall seeing that particular announcement anywhere, so I will hope like heck that you are mistaken on that point!

I suspect Tiffany may show up elsewhere, as Magrat does. However, the way this one ends, I don't see another with her as the main character. I wouldn't mind being wrong about this, though. I also think I've read/heard somewhere that this closes it out. Can't remember where, though. The Amazon reviewer also thinks so.

On the other hand, now that the Nac Mac Feegles have seen the city, I can't see them staying away.

This is a more serious book, but it's right for the times.

I agree with you. This is my favorite YA series of all time.
I found out about Pratchett by picking up Monstrous Regiment which I loved. Then I got Night Watch which I love the best of the grownup ones. He is an amazing author.

Amazing Maurice & His Educated Rodents might be the first one I read, because it was on Vermont's Dorothy Canfield Fisher reading list (for grades 4-8) when it first came out. Then I started with Weird Sisters, I think, and went on from there. He is amazing, and I'm as fond of Nation as I am of the Discworld series.

Me, too. He manages to put me into whatever world he is writing about. I love Maurice, too.

Wildcat STILL hasn't finished it!! She says she likes it but is just reading it slowly. Well, my book group's reading The Woman in White, so at least I have plenty to keep me busy while I wait (though it's actually a re-read for me).

I can understand Wildcat's desire to read it slowly. There's a lot going on that asks for thought--Tiffany doesn't do the obvious thing in several situations, but what she does turns out to be the right thing (of course).

I've never read The Woman in White, but must. Will add it to the TBR pile.
