When I was there in 84/85, the Schönbrunn Palace gardens were also still the place where East and West would meet for unofficial conversations (and where spies would occasionally hand over secrets). It was interesting to see when the trench coats were out, when it was tourists, and when it was grannies walking or moms pushing strollers. The gardens are at least as beautiful as the palace--and free.
