First Draft Metaphors

Sounds like you're making great progress!

I usually write bare-bones first drafts and have to expand. Though a lot of this depends on your definition of first draft. By the time I have a finished draft, it's usually the tenth or so draft of most of the pieces.

A friend of mine says she doesn't write a first draft, she writes a first bog -- and then she was to slog around in it looking for the the path. I can relate to that one. Baggy pants sounds like a much easier thing to revise. Go you!

While I can relate to searching for a path through the bog, if I thought too much about that analogy, I think I'd be worried about wandering endlessly--or getting sucked into the Lightning Sand of the Fire Swamp.
