The Red Ripe Strawberry

Jun 18, 2010 20:53

Today BD and I went strawberry picking. It was hot and the rows were fragrant with the scent of ripe strawberries, with a hint of our sunscreen. We've been picking berries at River Berry Farm for as long as they've been in business.

Today as we were picking, BD paused, then asked, "Wasn't there a book about a mouse and a strawberry?" It took us a ( Read more... )

Wow! I've beem so busy I didn't realize it was strawberry time already. I'll have to go pick some this weekend.

I hate to say this, but I'm more of a naked strawberry or strawberry and cream kind of girl. When I was a teenager I sat in the field next to my parent's house and ate wild strawberries until my hand were red. But by the time I got home it wasn't just my hands that had changed color-- I had hives all over my body. There is such a thing as tooooooooo much of a good thing :)

Hope you get some! They seem to have hit the right combination of sun and rain this year. We used to do the same thing when I was a kid--go to a nearby field and eat wild strawberries. I do remember one year, though, when they were so plentiful we not only ate our fill, but picked enough for a wild strawberry shortcake.

I've known that strawberries could cause hives, but don't seem to be bothered that way, very happily for me. Overindulging in tomatoes, though, makes my joints ache, at least the first time. Glad to hear that you can still indulge in strawberries, though.

Definitely the biscuit version. But usually just eat strawberries plain because that works just fine.

Oh, I agree, especially when they're fresh picked, strawberries are as good plain. We also like to dunk them in a bit of sour cream or plain yoghurt and then into maple sugar and then eat them. I like to put them in a salad with spinach, too, but the rest of my family won't go there.

We made individual sweetened biscuits, sliced in half, buttered the bottom hot from the oven, poured over sweetened sliced strawberries, put the top on, more strawberries, and then whipped cream. It is a trip!
When I was little I didn't like whipped cream... One time my Aunt Priscilla had put it on and she made me eat it! Later when I loved it, I always kidded her about making me eat it.
My brother would say he wanted strawberry shortcake without any of the red stuff or the white stuff! He got it that way too.

Buttering them after baking--that would be an excellent addition! When I was little, we didn't usually have whipped cream, because my dad doesn't care for it, so I never really thought about it until I went to a strawberry shortcake fundraiser. Your brother and my daughter seem to have similar taste, although BD (almost 21) does put about half a dozen strawberry slices on these days. Mostly though, she likes juice and whipped cream.

Individual taste is so fascinating, don't you think?

yes. I love reading about people, what they do, like think and feel. Memoirs, especially cooking ones, really give me a lot of pleasure.
