Liz made no protest when Jack tucked her into his side protectively, almost shielding her from his mother. After having heard the stories he had about her, she was downright happy he felt the need to keep her from getting hurt (even though that comment from the dance floor still confused the hell out of her).
"So this is 'the one'! Elizabeth!" Jack's mother looked positively gleeful as she clasped her hands together and told her, "Welcome! Welcome welcome welcome!"
Jack held up a hand, trying to calm her down. "Mother... mother."
He gained her attention, but only briefly before her steely gaze was back on Liz. "I think you finally got it right, Jackie-boy. This one's got real character, real strength of character." She raised her eyebrows and added, "And she looks like she's got a good, solid baby bucket."
Liz's jaw dropped in a chuckle as her eyebrows flew up. "Wow, you are just a sassy old broad, aren't you?"
"Mother..." Jack tried again. "What are you doing here?"
"I was at the wedding of that ex-wife of yours... Bianca..."
Jack and Liz blanched in unison at the butchering of Bianca's name, but his mother took no notice.
"She'd heard through some mutual friend of yours that you were getting hitched today too, and that I could find you at the Plaza."
"Dammit," Jack grumbled under his breath. "I wish I knew who that so-called friend was."
Liz just raised her eyebrows, slightly intrigued by the family interaction.
"So Elizabeth..." Colleen narrowed her eyes, scrutinizing Liz. "You're not marrying Jack for his money, are you?"
Liz shook her head. "Nope, for his penthouse."
That won a laugh from her mother-in-law, and Jack looked downright surprised -- though whether it was the comment or hearing laughter from his mother, Liz couldn't be sure. She smiled uneasily at the grin she was receiving from his mother and kind of wanted to just hide behind Jack for the rest of the night.
He was taller than her, it could totally work.
"Wow, she's a sharp one, Jack," Colleen told her son. "You're not gonna divorce her right away, are you? Because I think you should hang on to this one for awhile."
Liz looked up to gauge Jack's reaction. His face betrayed nothing, and his fleeting smile was enigmatic, at best. He blinked slowly and responded calmly, "No, mother."
Liz guessed he was starting to get tense; especially when his grip on her waist became almost painful. She winced and shied away, grabbing his hand. "Uh, Jack..." she added, "honey?" for his mother's benefit.
At hearing the term of endearment, Jack's head snapped to look at her. She didn't give him time to ponder whether it was sincere or not as she tugged on his hand and nodded toward the dance floor. "They're playing our song. Dance with me."
Jack, catching on to her, grinned at her in that way he had when he was really incredibly impressed with her; and he clutched her hand tightly, hastily excusing them while he just about rushed her onto the dance floor.
Once they were in the middle of the crowd of dancing wedding guests, Jack pulled her close with an almost brute force. She felt all the tension leave his body as he started to sway them, sighing out heavily. "Lemon, I could kiss you for doing that."
Liz smiled, completely ignoring the thought that maybe it'd be interesting to kiss him, just once, and instead she told him, "You know, she doesn't seem as scary as you make her out to be."
When he shot her a look, she tilted her head and clarified, "As scary. She is a little terrifying, I'll give you that."
Jack just smiled down at her and Liz looked around at the crowd, listening to Fred Astaire's version of "Cheek To Cheek". She looked up at her husband questioningly, "Are all of the songs tonight going to be from the forties and fifties?"
"Don't worry; I've made sure to have the DJ queue up some Chamillionaire for you and your staff."
Liz chuckled a bit and let herself drift closer to him. "Thanks, Jack."
They danced silently for a moment, both of them watching Jack's mother head straight for the bar, before Jack asked her, "How's the champagne treating you?"
She smiled. "Well, that run-in with your mother sobered me up a bit most definitely, but... things are still pleasantly fuzzy."
He chuckled at her terminology before mentioning, "I can tell."
She furrowed her brows up at him. "How?"
"You're rubbing my back."
"Oh!" She jerked her hand back to the safe harbor of his shoulder, wondering why she hadn't felt herself doing that. "Sorry."
"Wasn't complaining, just mentioning," he told her, and turned them slowly in a circle.
"Oh."
Jack pulled back slightly and searched her eyes. Liz kinda hated that he could read her so easily, but... at the same time it was really kind of cool. His low voice scraped her already-sensitized nerve endings (maybe champagne around Jack really was not a good idea) as he pulled her close and murmured, "You know Liz, I won't hold it against you if you let yourself relax with me. I won't try to kiss you, I won't grope you... I won't even lift up your dress to peek at that blue underwear Cerie got for you."
Liz started to blush furiously, and she hid her face from his view. So he had overheard that conversation... dammit.
But she listened to him. She relaxed with him -- against him, really -- and rested her forehead on his shoulder, closing her eyes as she once again felt everything spinning.
Jack pulled her closer and she went along with it, even draped her arm further across his shoulder. Her entire world was spinning, and she was no longer certain it was just the champagne. Was she ever going to figure out what the hell was going on?
