C.C. shifts the weight of the box she's carrying from one arm to the other. Following the breakup, she thought it best that she be the one to do the "returning of the other's items" first, despite both she and Jack being unwilling to compromise in their ill-fated relationship.
It's not that they couldn't have had a future -- they could have, had things been just a little different. Had there not been so much distance between them. Had there not been this weird, unexplainable... something between them keeping them apart. Almost like Jack was holding himself back... waiting for someone better, almost. She couldn't put her finger on what (or who?) exactly it was.
Part of her always wondered if it was Liz Lemon. She and Jack always seemed unusually close. Jack spoke of her enough, and always in a positive manner (give or take a few times in which he spoke of her with only a twinge of exasperation). But she never broached the subject with him, fearing either a look of "are you crazy?" or, even worse... a realization of feelings for the brunette.
When the elevator opens at Jack's floor, C.C. again juggles the box in her arms, strolling up to the desk of Jack's assistant, which is vacant. She frowns, finding this odd (though perhaps not -- the kid does eat at some point during the day, does he not? Surely he can't be at Jack's beck and call every moment), but she presses on. She gives only a soft, cursory knock on the door before pushing it open, and she almost drops the box at what she sees.
Jack is lying on his back on his desk, a low rumble of laughter coming from his lips (the kind she's heard before during their amorous moments), and Liz is kneeling on the desk over him, one knee between his legs and the other on the outside of his right leg, hands pressed into the desk on either side of his head. They're leaning in for a kiss and Jack's hands are stroking up her sides, taking with them the hem of her dress. C.C. guesses it's the volume of her gasp that breaks them apart.
"Oh, crapballs!" Liz nearly falls off the desk but Jack manages to catch her in time, tugging at his suit to compose himself.
He clears his throat. "C.C., I was unaware you'd be visiting today."
"Yeah, me too," Liz chuckles, elbowing her companion and shooting a look up at him.
He ignores it and continues to focus his gaze on C.C. She feels that now she should explain herself, though part of her can't. She has no idea why she chose today to return these things to him. She's wishing she hadn't. "I'm sorry to interrupt, I had no idea you two were--" She can't bring herself to say it; she feels so stupid.
And immediately they both hold their hands up, mouths open in preparation to deny what was blatantly obvious, but C.C. just shakes her head. "It's okay. I should've seen it coming."
Jack and Liz just look at each other, so she takes the opportunity to set the box down. She takes a few steps toward the door and tells him, "I was in the city for a few days and just thought I'd drop off this stuff of yours. Umm... I can just send for my things some other time, don't worry about bringing them to D.C."
Jack nods, and she thinks his hand goes to the small of Liz's back. "Thank you, C.C."
C.C. smiles at Liz and Liz nervously smiles back, echoing Jack's thank-you. "Well..." she sighs, "Sorry to interrupt, again. It was nice to see both of you."
The two of them awkwardly bid her farewell, and she leaves. Once in the elevator, she closes her eyes and vows to herself to always knock loudly should she ever visit this floor and that office again.
